Para evitar el aislamiento social y mejorar el bienestar físico y emocional en la tercera edad cobra especial importancia la socialización y establecer relaciones interpersonales con otras personas mayores.
Según unos estudios recientes la socialización en la tercera edad tiene efectos positivos en patologías tales como dolores articulares, control de las enfermedades crónicas, hipertensión arterial, diabetes, y la prevención de patologías de la esfera psico-social como la depresión, ansiedad o empeoramientos en los mismos.
En los centros de día las personas mayores realizan actividades adecuadas a sus preferencias tras realizar un mapa de vida en el que describe sus aficiones y hábitos. Se tienen en cuenta también aspectos físicos, cognitivos y sociales para lograr el mayor bienestar posible en la persona.
Uno de los mayores hándicap de hoy en día es el desconocimiento por parte de las familias de los beneficios positivos que reporta la socialización en la tercera edad.
