El insomnio puede influir muy negativamente en la salud de personas de todas las edades. Esta patología se suele dar muy frecuentemente en personas mayores, ya que la calidad del sueño baja a medida que pasan los años. El insomnio normalmente es algo pasajero, pero en las personas mayores puede volverse crónico. Las causas de esta falta de sueño pueden ser varias, desde medicamentos hasta sedentarismo. Si el motivo son las altas temperaturas, debemos actuar para que nuestro descanso no se vea comprometido.
El sueño está regulado por la secreción de una hormona, la melatonina, muy sensible a los cambios de luz y temperatura. Esa es una de las razones del insomnio sobre las que podemos actuar. Cuando el calor aprieta, lo mejor es crear un ambiente óptimo de descanso. Esto es, bajar las persianas, dejar que entre la brisa o conectar el aire acondicionado o el ventilador, pero nunca para que nos dé directamente a nosotros. Una ducha templada antes de acostarse y una comida ligera nos ayudarán también a conciliar el sueño.
